Moving home is much easier when you have a clear plan. Our house moving tips and moving checklist will help you prepare for your move, organise your packing and avoid some of the most common moving-day problems.
Whether you are moving across Dublin, elsewhere in Ireland or overseas, starting early can make the whole process considerably easier.
Choosing the Right Removal Company
Try to arrange your removal company 4–6 weeks before your move, particularly if you are moving during a busy period such as summer, the end of the month or a weekend.
Before choosing a mover:
- Get a written quotation clearly explaining what is included.
- For larger house moves, provide an accurate inventory or arrange a home survey so the removal company can properly assess the volume.
- Check what packing, dismantling, storage and other services are included in your quotation.
- Ask what protection is available for your belongings during the move.
- Don’t choose a removal company based on price alone. Consider experience, reputation and the level of service provided.
- Confirm your collection date, delivery arrangements, property access and any parking restrictions before moving day.
Get Cracking provides professional house removals in Dublin as well as international moving services for customers relocating overseas.
Packing Tips for Moving House
If you are packing yourself, start approximately 3–4 weeks before moving day. Begin with belongings you rarely use and gradually work towards everyday items.
Use these packing tips to stay organised:
- Pack one room at a time. This makes unpacking at your new home considerably easier.
- Use strong, good-quality moving boxes rather than overloaded or damaged cartons.
- Place heavier items at the bottom of boxes and lighter items on top.
- Avoid overfilling boxes. They should close properly and remain safe to lift and stack.
- Wrap glassware, china and other fragile belongings individually and use suitable protective material around them.
- Clearly label boxes with both the contents and destination room.
- Mark boxes containing delicate items FRAGILE.
- Keep liquids upright, make sure lids are securely closed and clearly identify the box.
- Keep essential medication, important documents, keys, chargers and valuables with you rather than packing them into the removal vehicle.
- When dismantling furniture, place screws and fittings in labelled bags so they can be easily identified during reassembly.
- Avoid lifting boxes or furniture that are too heavy for you to handle safely.
- Prepare an essentials box containing items you will need immediately at your new home, such as toiletries, basic kitchen items, children’s essentials and a change of clothes.
If you would rather leave the packing to professionals, Get Cracking provides professional packing services, including full and partial packing, protective wrapping and specialist crating.
Declutter Before You Move
Moving house is an excellent opportunity to decide what you actually want to bring to your new home.
Separate unwanted belongings into items that can be donated, recycled, sold or disposed of appropriately. Doing this before packing can reduce the amount that needs to be moved and may also reduce the time required for your removal.
Get Cracking Ltd also provides licensed waste collection and property-clearance services under Waste Collection Permit NWCPO-23-12971-01. Information about authorised waste collection in Ireland is available from the National Waste Collection Permit Office.
Protecting Furniture During Your Move
Furniture should be checked before moving day, particularly flat-pack or self-assembled furniture.
Loose fittings can make furniture less stable during handling and transport. Check screws, fixings, shelves, doors and back panels before the move. Some larger items may be safer to transport when professionally dismantled.
Our moving crews can provide protective wrapping and, where appropriate, furniture dismantling and reassembly as part of your removal service.
For particularly delicate belongings, artwork or other items requiring additional protection, ask about our specialist moving services.
Moving House Checklist for Moving Day
Before leaving your old home:
- Check every room, cupboard, attic, garage and shed.
- Keep passports, documents, medication, jewellery and other important personal items with you.
- Take final electricity and gas meter readings where applicable.
- Photograph meter readings and the condition of the property if appropriate.
- Make sure you have keys and access information for your new property.
- Check that your removal company has the correct delivery address, Eircode and contact number.
- Arrange mail redirection and notify relevant organisations of your new address.
The official Citizens Information guide to moving to a new home provides a useful Irish checklist covering utilities, post redirection, Revenue, financial institutions, insurance policies and other address changes. Citizens Information also recommends taking final meter readings when leaving and initial readings at the new property.
For electricity and gas, the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) provides information about meter readings and moving into or out of a property.
