Australian Customs must check that restricted or prohibited goods are not imported into Australia; their Customs service also collect taxes and duties with may be due on imported goods. If you wish to import your household goods into Australia without paying taxes it duty, you must have owned and used these goods for a minimum of 12 months. Please be aware that all cigarettes and alcohol imported, regardless of the amount, will be liable to duty and tax.
The Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AQIS) are very strict. Every shipment that enters Australia will undergo a physical inspection from AQIS. This is to check that shipments are free from contaminated risk items, and also do not contain any prohibited or restricted goods. If restricted or contaminated goods are in your shipment, AQIS may demand that any items they deem necessary be treated by means of steam cleaning or fumigation. If the items are prohibited, AQIS may even confiscate or destroy them. Steam cleaning or fumigation can be very costly so Get Cracking Ltd. recommend that, prior to packing any of the following goods for import into Australia, you either meticulously clean these yourself or get these professionally cleaned:
- All camping gear
- Sporting gear including bikes
- Gardening gear including lawn movers and tools
- Garden furniture
- Vacuum cleaners.
The motor vehicle industry in Australia is closely monitored so in order to import a motor vehicle, you must obtain a permit. You will also have to pay GST and import duty.
Upon arrival into Australia, every motor vehicle will undergo a physical inspection by the Quarantine service. If they decide that you vehicle is not clean, they may order it to undergo an expensive steam cleaning. To reduce the risk of this happening to your vehicle, Get Cracking Ltd recommend that you either meticulously clean your vehicle yourself or get it professionally cleaned. Please note that this clean would include the interior as well as the exterior and the undercarriage.

It is recommended to send your pet through a registered pet transportation agent who will be able to contact all the relevant agencies in Australia.
How do I move my car to Australia?
Moving motor vehicles and motor bikes to Australia is possible provided Customs criteria are met. This service is usually depot to depot, meaning the motor vehicle will be collected by you from our partners depot in Australia following customs clearance. Customs may require evidence that the owner of the vehicle has lived abroad for 12 months or longer, so a copy of your passport with date stamp showing arrival in Australia, or copy of lease or rental agreement on in Australia would be sufficient.
Please note that you will need to obtain an approval to ship your car first. You will also have to pay duty/tax to import your car to Australia.
With Australia’s strict Quarantine service there is a good possibility that this may happen, so to try and avoid this and the expensive charges we recommend that you have your vehicle thoroughly groomed on the interior and exterior before shipping. Special attention to the wheel arches, engine bay and other areas that could trap contaminants.
Will I have to pay duty on my household goods in Australia?
If you have owned and used your goods for 12 months or more then you will be allowed to import your general household goods free of duty/tax. This rule excludes items such as alcohol, cigarettes, and commercial items.
Will my belongings be fumigated when they arrive in Australia?
Your belongings may be fumigated upon arrival in Australia. It is important to know that if any of your goods require treatment such as fumigation it is usually limited to specific items as opposed to your whole shipment.
