During removals to Australia, your goods must be cleared by both the Customs and Quarantine services. Australia’s quarantine laws are strict, especially in regard to food, animal and plant material. Sometimes, you may need to obtain a permit to bring certain goods into Australia as they have other restrictions. Australian Customs must check that restricted or prohibited goods are not imported into Australia; their Customs service also collect taxes and duties with may be due on imported goods. If you wish to import your household goods into Australia without paying taxes it duty, you must have owned and used these goods for a minimum of 12 months. Please be aware that all cigarettes and alcohol imported, regardless of the amount, will be liable to duty and tax.

The Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AQIS) are very strict. Every shipment that enters Australia will undergo a physical inspection from AQIS. This is to check that shipments are free from contaminated risk items, and also do not contain any prohibited or restricted goods. If restricted or contaminated goods are in your shipment, AQIS may demand that any items they deem necessary be treated by means of steam cleaning or fumigation. If the items are prohibited, AQIS may even confiscate or destroy them. Steam cleaning or fumigation can be very costly so Get Cracking Ltd. recommend that, prior to packing any of the following goods for import into Australia, you either meticulously clean these yourself or get these professionally cleaned:

• Sporting gear including bikes
• Gardening gear including lawn movers and tools
• Garden furniture
• Vacuum cleaners.

The motor vehicle industry in Australia is closely monitored so in order to import a motor vehicle, you must obtain a permit. You will also have to pay GST and import duty.

Upon arrival into Australia, every motor vehicle will undergo a physical inspection by the Quarantine service. If they decide that you vehicle is not clean, they may order it to undergo an expensive steam cleaning. To reduce the risk of this happening to your vehicle, Get Cracking Ltd recommend that you either meticulously clean your vehicle yourself or get it professionally cleaned. Please note that this clean would include the interior as well as the exterior and the undercarriage.
