The South African Customs service clear all household goods coming into South Africa. In order to get this clearance, you are required to:
- complete a declaration
- produce your passport
- produce the required visas if you are immigrating to South Africa.
If you are a new immigrant to South Africa, you are permitted to import your used household items without being charged duty. If you are a returning South African resident, you may import your used household items without being charged duty provided you have not been resident in South Africa for at least six months. Duty has to be paid on the following:
- new furniture
- new household items
- alcohol
- presents / souvenirs.
- If you wish to import a firearm, you will require an import permit and a certificate from the South African Police Firearm Registrar.

Will I have to pay on duty on my household goods in South Africa?
As a new immigrant you can import your household goods free of duty. As a returning South African residence you can also import your household goods free of duty provided you have been out of South Africa for at least six months.
Can I ship my car to South Africa?
Yes you can. As an immigrant to South Africa you will need to obtain an import permit and import it free of duty provided they have owned the vehicle abroad for 12 months and will not sell it within two years of importation into South Africa. There will be VAT payable on the vehicle. Returning South Africans have to pay full duty & VAT on motor vehicles but do not have to obtain and import permit.
Can I pack my own things?
Yes you can, so long as they are packed securely in quality packing cartons. Whilst you can save money it is important to know the we do not provide insurance coverage for damage on any items you pack.
